âYo, what was so important that you dragged me out here in the middle of the night?â Jax asks, yawning as I let him into my flat.
He saunters over to the coffee table, topping my glass up from the nearly empty bottle of bourbon.
I still feel shitty about sneaking away from Lorraineâs place, but if I stayed I would have started smashing up the place.
Jaxâs eyes scan the room now, taking in the upturned arm chair, broken glass on the floor from where I smashed a crystal decanter against the wall, and an ugly hole in the plaster from where my fist went through.
âWhat happened?â He asks.
âI got a call from one of Chenâs boys tonight.â I dust the plaster dust off my bruised fist. âTheyâve been watching us. Me.â
âAnd this surprised you?â
âNot particularly. Its what they said after that pissed me off.â God damn it. Every time. Every fucking time. Youâd think I would have learnt my lesson after the first time.
Jax walks closer, stepping over the remains of my decanter, and hands me my glass.
âDrink.â
I take a hefty gulp, focusing on breathing deeply. Trying to regain my composure as rage simmers inside. The need to maim and kill slowly rearing its face.
âThey threatened me. Which Iâm fine with, my life revolves around that shit.â I say.
âBut thatâs not all they did, is it?â Jax asks, stopping in front of a framed picture from Ellieâs surprise 28th birthday party. Itâs a photo of her shocked face when she entered the house. âYou donât respond to threats made against you. You couldnât care less about them. So what did they threaten you with?â
âThe Greenhouse.â
âAnd?â
Here it comes. I suppose I have to tell him at some point.
âBesides telling me theyâre going to burn the bar to the ground, they told me how theyâve been watching me and Lorraine.â I ball my fists up again. âIâve been spending time with her recently.â
Jax looks back at me, signalling me to continue.
âThey want to make her suffer. Said theyâll grab her, and make her death slow. Painful. For revenge.â As I speak the words, my old friend resurfaces inside me. Iâd kept him at bay with the drinking. Turning off my thoughts. But that isnât working tonight. The rage begins consuming me, and Iâm surprised the glass hasnât shattered yet in my grip.
âWhat do you want us to do, Ryk?â
âWar. This has gone on long enough Jax. First they hit us. Then we retaliate. They go into hiding, then launch another attack. This fucking cycle repeats itself again and again. How long are we going to keep this up?â I ask, âWe have an unwritten truce with the other families in London. The Russians, Japanese, Italians, we all get along. Focus on the money, reduce the bloodshed. These fucking Triads, though. They want it all. And frankly, Iâve had enough.â
âYea, you and me both brother. But we canât go to war with them.â
His words pierce through me like an ice dagger. Jax knows Iâd lay down my life for him with a smile on my face.
